ADVANCED SCREENING

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
follows a group of British retirees who decide to "outsource" their retirement to less expensive and seemingly exotic India.

Enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel and bolstered with visions of a life of leisure, they arrive to find the palace a shell of its former self.

Though the new environment is less luxurious than imagined, they are forever transformed by their shared experiences, discovering that life and love can begin again when you let go of the past.

Guest Speaker

Pru Lamason spoke about the Boulcott  Stopbank Project designed to protect the Hutt CBD, Hospital and central residential area .

The work has evolved from the Hutt River Flood plan and is planned to remedy the existing situation where stop banks are of poor quality and at places are non existent. The work is designed to cope with a flood water flow of 2800 cumecs (an apparent " once in a thousand year occurence" ! ) with the cost of this high standard not being a great deal more expensive than lower specification work. The Hutt River has a long history of flooding , the last two major ones being 1988 and 2005.

The work is now expected to completed by June 2013 thanks to the the Boulcott Farm Heritage Golf Club agreeing and complying with the project plans a year earlier than expected.

A lively question time followed. For those further interested there is an on site public viewing on Wednesday 7 March , 6:30pm- 7:30pm.

Announcements

Rotary International Conference Bangkok.

Who is joining us in Bangkok 6-9 May 2012? Traditionally 9940 has supported Convention very well and I am sure there will be a great number planning to attend Bangkok in May.  It is a wonderful experience for new Rotarians and those attending will return to invigorate your Club! The fun of this convention is in the friendship both at the sessions but also in the evenings as we enjoy each other’s company and savor the city’s cuisine.
Do consider joining us.  The convention costs are very reasonable this year (only US$160/person before 1 Dec 2011) and if you book your flights early, it will be even more affordable. To register your interest please advise me by end of September so we can look at booking accommodation together at howard.tong@xtra.co.nz, the sooner the better. Join Jenny and me and be part of the “Kiwi’s in Bangkok

Rotary Global Swimarathon - we need 14 volunteers

I know all clubs always have a lot of events to consider participating in.  This event is a little different as it has two goals.  The first is to raise funds towards polio eradication.  The second is to be part of breaking a Guinness World Record!  Its also different because it is being held at 1am on Sunday 26th February.

Rotary Global Swimarathon
This event is HUGE click http://g.co/maps/eur46 to see how huge.  Once you’ve opened the map you can move around the world to see all the map pins.  There are two events being held in Wellington, one in Hutt City at Huia Pool and the other in Wellington City at Freyberg Pool.

Purpose: Raise funds to eradicate polio, in addition the event is attempting to break a Guinness World Record by having as many people as possible swim 100m (4 lengths of Huia pool) in the one hour for us in NZ that hour is 1am Sunday 26th February.
To contribute ‘numbers’ towards breaking the record we must have at least 25 swimmers…..so tell anyone and everyone what we’re doing and get them to come along.  Our website has been updated and you can send anyone interested in swimming to: www.huttvalleyrotary.org.nz/swimarathon where they can pre-register (which will help us get an idea of how many people are coming

Swimmers will be asked to pay $5 to enter the event and ALL funds will go towards the Polio Plus fund.

Date: Saturday night 25th February into Sunday morning 26th February
Time: midnight until 2pm
Place: meet at the Stratton’s house (at about 9:30pm 25th February) then over to Huia Pool
Rolefirst part: assist with registering participants as they arrive from 12:10am until 12:45
Rolesecond part: be a lane adjudicator to check off swimmers completing each of the four lengths

Other bits required:
Cameras the more the merrier!

My goal for the night is to have FUN!  Hope you can join us; please contact me with any questions. Keep an eye out in the Hutt News for the promotional stuff.  If you can help fantastic, if you’re keen on swimming 100m bring your togs too!
